 blog post 1 (friday):

  • Throughout Wednesday my group and I created a game plan on who we were going to interview and how we were going to lay out our documentary. We decided we would go interview the 5th graders at Hawken middle school Thursday then go interview high school students Friday. These are the questions we asked.

  • What's your name?

  • How old are you?

  • Who was the most controversial president of your lifetime?

  • Do you consider yourself an activist?

    • If yes, do you think you would still be as politically active if not for ____'s presidency? Why?

    • If no, what do you think it would take for you to become an activist?

  • What does feminism mean to you? Are you a feminist?

  • In asking these questions we noticed that the 11 year olds did not really understand some of the words we were using. Some they did not understand were “controversial,” “activist,” and “feminism.” When they became confused we kindly and easily explained it to them. In total, we interviewed about 15 5th graders. We then went to Mrs. Gretter’s 8th grade Spanish class and interviewed about 9 more students. Fortunately, we did not have to explain the definitions of words to them like we did to the younger students. Below are examples of a 5th graders interview and an 8th graders interview.

  • Something that I find so interesting in these interviews is everyone's range in responses. Going into this Rishita, Lena, and I thought everyone would lean towards one answer but it was eye  opening and very interesting to see the difference in responses. In addition to listening to the 5th graders we realized how much of influence parents have on their children. Some of my hopes for this project are that we are able to seamlessly connect different interviews into our documentary while making it look professional. We want to incorporate every response from different people to have the broadest possible audience. Working in a group has definitely helped our project be the best that it could be. When making these interview questions we each came up with about 5 and then combined and critiqued them to make the best possible questions. We each brought forth new and interesting ideas that none of us would have been able to come up with on our own. It is so fun to be with my friends and starting this project is very exciting and I can tell it is going to be very rewarding as well.
